From upside down planes to living life on your own terms: MML Media Mashup Feb 16-22/25
The week in a thousand words or less
This week I thought I’d try something a little bit different.
Rather than deep diving into a story from my life, I’ll be sharing some of the stuff I’ve been watching and listening to.
You might find something that catches your interest, helps you in some way, or at the very least, gives you a laugh.
Min-Max Life News Radar
Here’s what happened this past week (at least in my little world).
Eggs are still outrageously priced.
Detroit has turned into a frozen lake.
Avowed, the latest first-person fantasy RPG from Obsidian, has not been received well by the gaming community and sits at a 6.6 Metacritic user score at the time of this writing.
Yet another plane crashed, this time in Toronto. Thankfully all passengers survived.
What I’m Watching
Severance Season 2 Episode 6: Attila
We’re now firmly in the second half of season 2. Mr. Milchik has a busy day doing something. Mark S. continues the reintegration process in a scene that had me wriggling in my seat. Helly R. takes her power back. Dylan’s Innie is having more fun than his Outtie.
But by far the best scenes in this episode for me were between Irving, Burt, and Fields. There’s a lot happening here and a ton to break down when you look at this world through the eyes of religion and Innie and Outie relationships.
Jared Henderson - Amazon removes your right to download Kindle books
Just like the title states, you’ll no longer be able to download Kindle books. You’re probably asking yourself, “Why would anyone do this?”
There are actually a couple good reasons.
To preserve a copy of the book. Whenever they want to, Amazon can send OTA updates to change covers and text in your books. Also if a book gets banned (which is annoyingly happening more and more frequently), Amazon can remove the book from your Kindle library entirely.
To make your own accessibility edits.
Amazon will put this into effect on February 26, 2025, so if you care about this, download your books before then.
Let’s Talk Psychology - Podcast - Live For Yourself, Not For Others
This video provides a summary of Kishimi and Koga’s book titled The Courage to Be Disliked. The main idea is that the path to true happiness is unlocked when you stop caring about what others think.
Easier said than done.
It resonated with me as I’ve been a people pleaser my whole life. When I was a kid, I wanted to be make my parents proud of me. In school, I cared about what my teachers and professors thought of me. In my adult life, I’m always conscious of how my coworkers perceive me.
This way of living adds unnecessary pressure to chase an ideal that other’s expectations of you have shaped.
Sprouht - 70 Year Old Millionaires Share Advice for Younger Self
I’m a believer in listening to the wisdom of those who’ve gone before us. It’s through their stories that we can tease apart lessons and apply them to our own lives.
Some common threads in this series of interviews are:
Take care of your health.
Dare to take risks (when you’re young).
Chase your passion, not money.
Avoid boredom.
Question what others tell you.
Honorable Mentions
The Fall Guy (Prime Video) - This was a fun watch. Tons of action (I mean, it’s a movie about a Hollywood stunt man). I didn’t realize how much I missed Hannah Waddingham since Ted Lasso came to an end.
The Creator (Prime Video) - This Sci-Fi film’s a perfect example of why you shouldn’t solely base what you watch on a Rotten Tomatoes score. I thoroughly enjoyed following the protagonist on his journey of “AI bad to not so bad to I will destroy anyone that would hurt them”.
What I’m Listening To
Bad Friends - 5th Badiversary w/ Chris Distefano & Dr. Phil
Bobby goes to Jake Paul’s Super Bowl party. The original Top Gun movie was actually an unrequited gay love story. Adam Ray and Chris Distefano improvise songs to wrap up the show.
TigerBelly - Steve Aoki & I’m a Playtapus
Fun fact: Steve Aoki’s dad, Rocky, started the Bennihanna chain of restaurants where he made Japanese food accessible to the American palate. Before that, he sold ice cream in Harlem.
